Experience
As a college student, I got my first taste of tutoring. I had a friend who was close to dropping out of engineering school, and was struggling with calculus. I worked to encourage the student and help them work through problems sets. I also gave my friend great advice on test taking strategies and preparation. My friend was able to turn the grade from a F to a B+, and eventually earned the engineering degree. This experience was so rewarding that I had to keep tutoring. I spent a year tutoring other students at the university in math, and those students experienced improvements as well. When I tutor math, I focus on helping students understand why the topics are important and what their practical applications are in the real world. This help students get more interested in the subject matter and helps motivate them to learn. I really enjoy helping others, and tutoring helped me realize that. I now volunteer at an after school program for inner-city schoolchildren. I teach these students science and math topics. I've also served in Panama as part of the Peace Corps in water engineering and sanitation engineering. When I have free time, I like to listen National Public Radio, go for a bike ride, and perform improv comedy. I'm excited to help students learn and achieve their goals.
